Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the vertical velocity during rapid opening and closing movements of mandible, that is the maximum opening vertical velocity(Va), the maximum closing vertical velocity(Vb) and the velocity just before centric occlusion (Vc), in the case of no intervening food (Experimental group I ), in muscle relaxed case using Myo-monitor without food intervention (Experimental group I), and in the case of chewing gum (Experimental group M).
Then it was measured the distance from centric occlusion to maximum opening velocity position(Ya) and that from centric occlusion to maximum closing velocity position(Yb). The result obtained will be summarized as follows:
1. The mean of maximum opening vertical velocity was 234.5-t42.2mm/sec in the, experimental group 1, 244.9¡¾46.7^(§®)/sec in the experimental group 1, 249.5¡¾52.5^(§®)/sec in the experimental group ¥².
The mean of maximum closing vertical velocity was 214.2¡¾44.6^(§®)/sec in the experiniental group ¥°, 213.0¡¾54.8^(§®)/sec in, the experimental group ¥±, 225.3¡¾39.9^(§®)/sec in the experimental group ¥².
Hence the mean of maximum opening vertical velocity was higher than that of maxim-um closing vertical velocity.
2. The mean of maximum opening vertical velocity position was 7.9¡¾1.5^(§®)/sec in the experimental group ¥°, 7, 7¡¾11.4^(§®)/in the experimental group ¥±, 7.6¡¾1.7^(§®) in the experimental group ¥².
The mean of maximum closing vertical velocity position was 8.7¡¾2.8 in the experimental group j , 7.6¡¾0.6^(§®) in the experimental group ¥±, 8.3¡¾3.1^(§®) in the experimental group ¥².
Therefore maximum closing vertical velocity position located, farther away from centric occlusion than maximum opening vertical velocity position.
3. The mean of velocity just before centric occlusion was 62.4¡¾36.2^(§®)/sec in the experimental group ¥°, 64.6¡¾37.0^(§®)/sec in the experimental group ¥±, 55.5¡¾38.1^(§®)/sec in the experimental group ¥², in the total 20 cases.
The velocity just before centric occlusion reduced rapidly from maximum closing vertical velocity and considerable within-subject stability if velocity just before :centric occlusion was found in the duration of the opening and closing cycle.
4. It was observed that the stability of maximum opening vertical velocity. maximum closing vertical velocity and velocity just before centric occlusion in each subject was considerable. but therewas not a signigicant relation in each experimental group.
